Some say it’s OK to mount a camera on your helmet as long as you don’t drill into it, the truth is the law may be different across the US so the safest thing to do is check with your local law enforcement officials.

I wanted to write a post about a subject that’s really gaining in popularity and I really am an advocate for it. You need to get a camera on your motorcycle, it may be a matter of life or death or at least evidence of what happened at that moment.
What actually started the entire camera thing was using them in cars. A lot of people started putting dash cams on their cars to protect them for a lot of different reasons and those same reasons apply for motorcycles, if not more so.
Why Motorcycles Are More Susceptible
The fact that when you’re on your motorcycle you’re a lot more susceptible to people
hitting you and when you’re trying to protect yourself out on the highway, you’re in a much more dangerous and precarious position than any cars.
You’re smaller on the road, especially in the US people don’t necessarily think about motorcycles on the road. They’re not used to seeing them at the side of their cars and it’s important that you get some video evidence to back you up in the unfortunate situation where you have an accident.
Always Find A Witness
It’s important more so when you don’t have witnesses so I know that whatever happens, I have the video evidence if a car comes out and hits me. I always ride with my gear on, my gloves, my helmet, my boots and everything else, but also when I ride I’m always plugged into my GoPros and I’m always recording everything that I’m doing.
It doesn’t necessarily mean you need to go with a full out rig like I have and have the whole video audio experience on your helmet. You can even set up a GoPro attached to your motorcycle rather than on your helmet so that way you’re protected.
Personally, I don’t have any dashcam on my car, I think it’s way more important to have the dashcam/video protection on your motorcycle.
I feel like I’m a lot more vulnerable, I’m in a much more dangerous position when I’m out riding the streets so that’s why I always have it on and that’s why I’m a huge advocate of it.
Not only is it going to protect you in the event of an accident, but you might also see something interesting and there you have it on video. Not only is it for personal protection liability but I also think it’s a fun thing to do.
It’s not that expensive anymore, you can get a good camera for under $100. My favorite is the GoPro Hero 7 Black (read my full review here), I have a battery pack that’s ten thousand milliamps (got it from Amazon) for around 20 bucks and that just powers my GoPro.
I put the charged battery in my chest jacket pocket and charge it up once a month, I ride all the time so I never have to worry about battery life.
I put on all my gear, put on my helmet with a GoPro already attached and I connect one cable, turn on my GoPro and that’s it.
When you think about it, you spent all that money on quality motorcycle gear just in case you have an accident but what are you going to do to protect yourself after?
How To Protect Yourself In Court
How are you going to protect yourself in court? If you have a video recording showing all the circumstances leading up to the accident no matter what the other person says, you have full video evidence.
Maybe you don’t even know what happened, a lot of times people go into shock and can’t remember exactly what happened but a video is an uncompromised witness.
There is Nothing More a Judge Likes
There is nothing more a judge likes than video evidence, the video doesn’t lie. You can go back to your video and you can look at it and you know exactly what happened.
Video just gives you a heads up of why I think everybody on a motorcycle should have some sort of video on their bike, just to protect them from the unfortunate circumstance that may happen one day.
Obviously, we hope things don’t happen but we know they do, that’s why we wear good quality motorcycle gear.
